Moving Ahead!

Today is my last day as a full time employee at Cartoon Books.  It’s definitely a bittersweet situation for me emotionally.  On the one hand I am very excited to work on the freelance projects that I have lined up, but of course I also have an emotional tie for this company and the comics we have produced together for the last 12 years.

The last 8 months have been a roller coaster.  In July I was engaged, in November we were married, shortly after that we found out a baby was on the way!  Moving out of my condo and putting it up for sale was at the top of my stress list last fall, and now that seems so trivial.

The idea to go freelance has been a long time coming.  This will allow me to work at my own pace on the 3 or 4 projects that I have to juggle, plus I will be home when the baby arrives.  That’s my main reason for the change, but it’s exciting to have more flexibility in my schedule.

Of course I am continuing to work on projects with Jeff Smith and Cartoon Books, so it’s not a complete departure.  Jeff and Vijaya have always supported me as an artist, and they continue to challenge and encourage my career.  I will certainly miss the time in the office with Kathleen, Tom and Preston.  We are all like a family here.

All things said, I will always be available for the Cartoon Books crew.  The bonds we have won’t go away completely.  The road of life ahead is filled with so much crazy adventure that I feel a little overwhelmed, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Look for more coloring, more comic strips, and maybe even a graphic novel in a few years!  Cheers to the future!
